Skilled Trades

Overview

Sturgeon Collegiate’s Skilled Trades Pathway offers specialized programming for students interested in welding, automotive service tech, heavy equipment tech, or home construction technologies. Students gain hands-on experience while completing academic requirements for high school graduation — all while building job-ready skills that are directly aligned with Alberta’s workforce needs.

This program is designed to blend academic instruction with practical industry training, preparing students for success in post-secondary programs, certifications, and future employment in the trades.

Dual Credit & NAIT Partnership

Students may have the opportunity to take dual credit courses in partnership with NAIT, allowing them to:

  • Begin post-secondary pathways in welding or heavy equipment technology
  • Earn credits that count toward both high school and college programs
  • Experience real trades instruction from certified post-secondary instructors

NAIT’s partnership ensures a seamless bridge to further training and technical diplomas after graduation.

Courses:

Advanced Welding Technology

Earn 3 CTS Credits upon successful completion of the WELD 1000 DC Workplace Safety and Tools Course. This comprehensive 10 week course covers the following topics:

  • WDA3900: Apprenticeship Safety
  • WDA3401: Tools & Equipment
  • WDA3403: Oxyfuel & Plasma Arc

Term Offered: Fall, Winter

Registration Deadline: Fall - Early September, Winter - Mid January

Heavy Equipment Technology

Earn 3 CTS Credits upon successful completion of the IHET1110 Safety and Professionalism Course. This comprehensive 10 week course covers the following topics:

  • HEA 3900: Apprenticeship Safety
  • HEA 3400: Basic Tools
  • HEA 3405: Bearings and Seals

Term Offered: Winter

Registration Deadline: Mid January

Industry & Community Partnerships

Sturgeon Public Schools is actively collaborating with local businesses, trades professionals, and equipment providers to enhance student learning.

These partnerships may include:

  • Mentorship from certified tradespeople
  • Access to professional-grade tools and updated machinery
  • Real-world work experiences (e.g., job site exposure or mentorship programs)

Student Outcomes

Students will graduate with:

  • An Alberta High School Diploma
  • Foundational and advanced CTS credits in welding, automotive tech, heavy equipment, or home construction technology
  • Dual credit (where available) toward post-secondary trades diplomas
  • Knowledge and skillsets aligned with Red Seal Apprenticeship prerequisites
  • A strong resume for entry into Alberta’s trades-focused workforce

  • Interested in hands-on learning and career-ready training
  • Committed to balancing academic coursework with technical training

No previous shop or tool experience is required — just a strong interest in skilled trades and a willingness to learn.
