SCHS - Japanese Exchange, April and July 2010

In April, Sturgeon Composite High School will be one of several schools in the Edmonton area to host Japanese students from the Yamate Gakuin High School in Yokohama, Japan. During this two week exchange, Japanese students are billeted with families in the area and will attend classes at SCHS during the week, followed by sight seeing on evenings and weekends. A few highlights of their stay in Canada will include visits to Jasper, West Edmonton Mall, Fort Edmonton Park, and the Alberta Museum. There will also be a barbeque, as well as a cultural performance done by the Japanese students.

In July, students from SCHS pay a return visit to Yokohama, Japan and stay with Japanese families. Yamate Gakuin organizes special day tours for the visiting students. The only costs incurred by the Alberta students are airfare, ground transportation, insurance and spending money.

This program is designed to give Alberta students an opportunity to learn about Japan and its culture, and to give Japanese students a similar opportunity to learn about Canada. Students may find that they share many common interests; especially in clothing, music and sports.

There is limited space available. This Japanese exchange occurs once every three years, so don’t miss your opportunity for a “Trip of a Lifetime”.

SCHS Trip to Spain, Spring Break 2010:

Latest News:

Plans continue to go well for the Spain Trip. I am pleased to announce that the other supervisors for the trip will be Mr. Pollmann (Vice Principal SCHS), Mrs. Pollmann (Principal Namao), Ms. Jewell, and Ms. Devolder.

The first payment of $1525.00 is due October 13th. Please make all cheques or money orders payable to Travelmasters Vancouver. I will only be accepting money orders or cheques for this payment. The final payment of $1525 will be due January 11, 2010. All money must be handed in with Ms. Speer, not in the office.

We will be having a short
MANDATORY parent meeting Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 7:00 PM. At this meeting, a number of important legal documents must be signed and witnessed/notarized officially. You must have this document legally witnessed/notarized at your own expense if you do not attend this meeting. Both birth parents or legal guardians must sign these documents and have them witnessed/notarized.

Each birth parent or legal guardian is required to bring a photocopy of two pieces of ID to the parent meeting. These two pieces of ID must be photocopied on one letter sized page (8.5 x 11).

Your ID must follow the following guidelines:

First piece either: Passport, Drivers License, Provincial ID Card or Citizenship Card
Second Piece either: Birth Certificate, Alberta Health Care Card, Fire Arms Acquisition Certificate, Social Insurance Card or Credit Card.

Parents must also bring the completed medical form to the Oct 22nd parent meeting.

Students must have a passport by November 30, 2009. Students must also provide two copies of this passport on a letter sized sheet of paper (8.5 x 11) at this time. The passport should be centered in the middle of the page and show the photo and information page. (Similar to the beautiful example I made below)

Students also require a money belt for the trip. Each student will be required to carry their passport, currency, and other valuable documents in a secure and hidden money belt. A money belt is a small, nylon-zippered pouch that fastens around the waist under your pants. These are widely available for purchase at places like AMA, the Bay, and any travel shop.

This trip is available to students in the SCHS Spanish program. Please call Ms. Speer at 780.973.3301 with any questions.
