Entering a New School

Entering a new school can be both exciting and challenging at the same time. With the challenge of change can come stress and we know that, if not properly addressed, stress can have detrimental effects. Knowing how to build and develop positive relationships and access supports can help make the transition into high school comfortable and enjoyable.

Building Support for New Students

Currently, to assist our new grade 10 students as they enter into our school, we have developed an integrated approach to help these students and their parents understand this transition. The first step in this process begins with our counselling staff visiting the junior high schools in the division, followed by providing tours of the school for all grade nine students and opening the school to parents and members of the community. On the first day of registration, our new grade 10s are introduced to key supporting individuals in the school community and provided a power point presentation outlining the numerous co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities at the school followed by a review the school’s expectations of all students. This systematic and effective approach to grade 10 orientation has evolved over several years and is based upon the ongoing feedback from parents and students alike.

Basic Information for New Students

Information from our regular fall orientation is not always absorbed and understood by everyone. Many students find the first few days at a new school to be an overwhelming experience and new students to the school entering grades 11 or 12 or new students entering mid year miss the regular orientation process.

Recognizing that today’s generation of students are often most comfortable accessing information online assists us in providing this additional venue where new and current students and their parents or guardians can conveniently access much of our basic orientation information whenever they need it. Selecting the appropriate link below will provide an overview of our orientation information for you to preview before entering the school or to review anytime afterwards.
