Music CoursesMUSIC Students are encouraged to register in the S.C.H.S. music program. Various courses are offered which allow all students to explore and develop the talents that they all possess within. Music courses aid in developing self-confidence, leadership, creativity, communication. As well, music education provides an opportunity to bring art form to life; to express, perform and create. Students successfully completing Instrumental Music 30, Choral Music 30, General Music30 (guitar 5 credit), Vocal Jazz 35 and Instrumental Jazz 35 can use these course grades towards their Rutherford Scholarship, as well as part of their admission requirements towards many post-secondary courses of study. Please note only one 30 level fine artscourse is allowed to be used towards entrance to most post-secondaryinstitutions. *Students enrolled in instrumental music courses will be provided with a suitable quality band instrument. **Students enrolled in more than one course pay a maximum of $120.00; students who bring their own instrument pay $30.00. BEGINNING BAND 10(INSTRUMENTAL) CREDITS: 3 PREREQ: NONE FEE: $40.00 CONTENT: This course is designed to allow students who have never been in concert band to learn a concert band instrument with the goal of moving them into the 5 credit program if they choose. The majority of class time will bespent on learning to play the instruments and to begin reading music notation. Students who progress quickly will be asked to join music 10 in semester 2. MUSIC 10 (INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT BAND)* CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: THIS COURSE IS INTENDED FOR STUDENTS WHO COMPLETED GRADE 9 BAND WITH 50% IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL OR FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE STUDIED A BAND INSTRUMENT PRIVATELY FOR 2YEARS MINIMUM. FEE: $60.00** CONTENT: The primary focus of this course is for each student to develop his/her musical technique and ability. The majority of class time is spent developing skills through band rehearsal however some time may be spent in small ensembles. Music theory is also explored covering topics such as theoretical rudiments of music and music appreciation. MUSIC 20 (INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT BAND)* CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN MUSIC 10 (INSTRUMENTAL) AND RECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR FEE: $60.00** CONTENT: In this second level of high school music, students will develop their music knowledge and instrumental technique to a higher level. More emphasis is placed on developing as a performer through solo and small ensemble repertoire. MUSIC 30 (INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT BAND)* CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN MUSIC 20 (INSTRUMENTAL) AND RECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR FEE: $60.00** CONTENT: This is the senior level course in this program. Continued development of musical technique and ability are furthered, with more focus on leadership skills through conducting and leading small ensembles. MUSIC 10 (CHORAL) CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: NONE FEE: $25.00** CONTENT: Various styles of vocal music will be explored so that students can develop correct vocal techniques and skills. This will be achieved through group rehearsals, small ensembles and solo work. Music theory is also explored covering topics such as theoretical rudiments of music and music appreciation. MUSIC 20 (CHORAL) CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN MUSIC 10 (CHORAL) AND THE RECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR FEE: $25.00** CONTENT: Continued exploration of various styles of vocal music so that students can develop correct vocal techniques and skills. Focus will be placed on small ensembles and solo work. MUSIC 30 (CHORAL) CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN MUSIC 20 (CHORAL) AND THE RECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR FEE: $25.00** CONTENT: This level of choral music will give the student opportunity to further developtheir vocal range and ability. More emphasis will be placed on solo performance and individual development. GENERAL MUSIC 10 (GUITAR) CREDITS: 3 PREREQ: NONE FEE: $25.00** CONTENT: Through the use of individual performance based courses the focus of this course will be on basic guitar performance techniques. The students will be taught note reading, basic and intermediate guitar chords, and basic music theory. Previous experience not required. Students are required to provide their own acoustic guitar. GENERAL MUSIC 20 (GUITAR) CREDITS: 3 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN GUITAR 10 AND THE RECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR FEE: $25.00** CONTENT: The focus of this program will be on guitar performance techniques at the intermediate level. Through various performance courses and group situations students will be taught note reading, guitar chords, music theory and small ensemble performance. Students are required to provide their own acoustic guitar. GENERAL MUSIC 30 (GUITAR) CREDITS: 3OR 5 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN GUITAR 20 AND THE RECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR FEE: $25.00** CONTENT: The focus will be on guitar performance at the advanced level. Technique, solo performance and group situations will be the focus. Students are required to provide theirown acoustic guitar. The 5credit program will allow those students who choose it to receive a 30 level 5 credit fine arts credit which can be used for the Rutherford Scholarship as well as entrance in to many post secondary fields of study. GENERAL MUSIC 10 (JAZZ STUDIES) CREDITS: 3 PREREQ: PREVIOUSPRIVATE VOCAL OR INSTRUMENTAL STUDY (3 YEARS), 50% IN GRADE 9 BAND FEE: $25.00** CONTENT: This course explores the various styles of jazz, including a study of its origins. With the emphasis on researching, creating and performing jazz music, students will be given the opportunity to listen and analyze jazz music from various eras, as well as study the art of improvisation. GENERAL MUSIC 20 (JAZZ STUDIES) AND THERECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR CREDITS: 3 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN JAZZ STUDIES 10 FEE: $60.00** CONTENT: In this second level Jazz Studies, students will focus on the jazz combo. The students will form their own groups and then arrange, perform, and compose songs for the small jazz combo. GENERAL MUSIC 30 (JAZZ STUDIES) AND THERECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR CREDITS: 3 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN JAZZ STUDIES 20 FEE: $60.00** CONTENT: In this third level of Jazz Studies, students will focus on composition and solo performance. The students will compose, arrange, and perform their own songs with a small jazz ensemble. INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ 15 (JAZZ BAND) MONDAY & TUESDAY - 3:30-5:00 PM CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN GRADE 9 BAND FEE: $60.00** CONTENT: The focus of this program will be the performance-based study of big bandmusic. Students will participatein several concerts and events. Elements such as improvisation will be explored. INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ 25 (JAZZ BAND) MONDAY & TUESDAY - 3:30-5:00 PM CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 10, JAZZ STUDIES 10 OR INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ 15 AND THE RECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR FEE: $60.00** CONTENT: This is the second level of instrumental jazz. Continued development of musical skills and ability will be furthered with focus on leadership skills. INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ 35 (JAZZ BAND) MONDAY & TUESDAY - 3:30-5:00 PM CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: 50% MINIMUM IN INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 20, JAZZ STUDIES 20 OR INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ 25 AND THE RECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR FEE: $60.00** CONTENT: This is the senior level course in the program. Skills will bedeveloped through rehearsals, public performances and other events. VOCAL JAZZ 25 (MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY - LUNCH HOUR) CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: AUDITIONED ENTRANCE REQUIREMENT AND 50% IN VOCAL JAZZ 15 FEE: $25.00** CONTENT: This is the second level of the above course. More focus will be put on leadership within the ensemble. VOCAL JAZZ 35 (MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY - LUNCH HOUR) CREDITS: 5 PREREQ: AUDITIONED ENTRANCE REQUIREMENT AND 50% IN VOCAL JAZZ 25 FEE: $25.00** CONTENT: This is a performance based vocal ensemble focusing on challenging vocal repertoire from all styles.
