Sturgeon Composite High School Music Department
The award winning music department at Sturgeon Composite High School is very active and offers opportunities for students of all levels of musical experience. SCHS offers a wide selection of music courses. Our belief is that every student should have the opportunity to learn and study music. All students in band are provided an instrument. Our concert band, choir, jazz band and vocal jazz ensembles make up our performance and touring groups. These groups compete in local and international music festivals, and perform a wide range of local concerts each year. The performance groups are supported by the Sturgeon Composite Area Music Promoter’s Association (SCAMPA) which helps raise funds for equipment as well as workshops and travel. Our groups have traveled from coast to coast as well as Seattle, Washington, Havana, Cuba and this year Hawaii. Currently, the following courses are offered:
Concert Band 10, 20 and 30
Beginning Band 10, 20, 30
Choral 10, 20 and 30
Instrumental Jazz 15, 25, 35
Vocal Jazz 15, 25, 35
Guitar 10, 20, 30
Jazz Studies 10, 20, 30
Our major performance groups such as band and choir are unsemestered and run the entire school year. Students who complete the 30 level of these courses are able to use this fine arts credit towards many post secondary programs of study as well as one of the grades for the Rutherford Scholarship program.
Parents and students can log into the Charms Music site to view the music program's public calendar and events list. The site also allows students to use the Recording Studio, download handouts and music files. Parents may view student account balances, fundraising profits and tour/trip payments as they become available. Contact Mr. Krips for login information.
We encourage you to become involved in music! For more information on what we offer, please contact Mr. Krips at 780-973-3301 ext. 1147 or by email at music_schs@sturgeon.ab.ca .
