What We Offer

Our Community:
The student population at Sturgeon Composite High School is primarily comprised of children from the surrounding rural area, drawn from seven feeder schools located in Sturgeon County. Located in Namao, Alberta, the school serves students from the rural communities in Sturgeon County. Sturgeon County’s location is on the northern boundaries of Edmonton and St. Albert and presently has a population of 18,621. Sturgeon County includes the communities of Bon Accord, Calahoo, Gibbons, Lancaster Park, Morinville, Namao, Redwater, Riviere Qui Barre and St. Albert. Additionally, Sturgeon draws students from north Edmonton and St. Albert, due to the broad selection of programs offered in our high school. In just the past few years our students have travelled to Spain, Cuba, Hawaii, Morocco, Germany and New York.

Our School Programs:
Sturgeon Composite High School offers a full range of programs to meet the educational needs of approximately one thousand full time students. From academics, fine arts, vocational and CTS courses to athletics, special education and leadership, the school provides a well-rounded education in a safe and caring environment. The school meets the needs of academic students by offering AP courses for all core subjects, and our students routinely score higher than the provincial averages on their diploma exams. Our academic students earn hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship monies yearly.

Our Career and Technology Studies:
Beyond our excellence in academics, Sturgeon Composite High School strives to provide opportunities for all students and prepare them for the workforce. We have a province wide reputation for trade-oriented programs that offer work experience credits, giving students the opportunity to work in their chosen fields while they earn credits for their high school diploma. There are ‘hands on’ courses in child care, health care, mechanics, construction technology, fabrication studies, fashion studies, cosmetology, computer technology and culinary arts. These programs highlight job related learning activities with actual clients from our surrounding communities. Our students have received gold medal recognition at the Skills Canada competition and many post-secondary scholarships to further their studies in their future careers.

Our Fine Arts:
Our fine arts programs are also richly developed and students can choose from a number of courses. Students can study any of several languages including French, Spanish and German. Our award-winning music program offers students courses in band, choir, vocal jazz, jazz studies, guitar and jazz band. We have one of the largest offering of music courses in our geographical area an impressive variety for the size of our school. The drama program and art program are also options for Sturgeon students to explore the world of fine arts.

Our Athletics:
Sturgeon also has a strong athletics program with many of our athletes receiving scholarships at post-secondary institutions and award winning sports teams. Our Rugby teams have gone to provincials for the last several years, and our basketball, curling, football and volleyball teams have all brought home championship banners recently.

Our Vision:
Our school intends to offer students a balanced experience between academic and recreational opportunities, while preparing our students for the workforce. Our mission at SCHS is to inspire the spirit of lifelong learning, while our vision is to; demonstrate passion for subject matter in order to create an energetic and comprehensive learning environment, provide students with a variety of learning opportunities in multiple disciplines, and to ensure learning is relevant and meaningful.
